DAVID JOHNSON - BUYING SONGS
Feb 2003

I WOULD LIKE TO THANK YOU FOR PROVIDING SUCH A GREAT STATION, I JUST LEARNED ABOUT IT A COUPLE OF DAYS AGO. MY QUESTION IS, WHEN LISTING THE SONGS, JUST TO THE LEFT OF A SONG A LITTLE BOX THAT SAYS "BUY" IS HIGHLIGHTED IN ORANGE. CAN YOU ACTUALLY BUY THESE SONGS? IF SO, ARE THEY ON 45'S, ALBUMS, OR CD'S? MY SECOND QUESTION IS, EVERY TIME A CLICK ON THE "BUY" BOX, IT COMES UP NO MATCHES FOUND. I REALLY WOULD LIKE TO GET A CD OF SOME OF THE GREAT SONGS THAT YOU ARE PLAYING, THANKS, DJ

Hi David! Thank you for your kind words and listening to my station: Doo-Wop Jukebox Gold! Your question about the search engine at Amazon.com is a valid one. As my station intends to be a good reference to doo-wop lovers I have entered the original recording-labels as much as possible. Needless to say that alot of these companies no longer exist and the engine at amazon.com certainly cannot find albums with those names. It better should search for artists / titles. So what you need to do is to manually enter the artist / group in the search box. Even better is to look at allmusic.com and search for the groups at their site. It's the best reference I've seen. You will even find very recent releases of doo-wop groups since doo-wop still is a "hot" selling item. They too have a buy option. (personaly I can recommend the "Doo-Wop box" series). If you want the original or rare 45's visit www.cdbbq.com
Have fun. GM
PS. I love your "Callsign" (DJ)!

Hello, Great station- great tunes; some I haven't heard in 20-25 years, and I have 3 jukeboxes full of oldie 45's, so I have a lot of them. Is there any way to get a playlist of all tunes played thruout the course of a day, or else an ongoing playlist from day to day? I would appreciate any info you can give me along these lines. Regards, Richard Fox

Papaoomowmow, You're killing me! I heard it again dog! Got to go home now, won't be able to concentrate. Seriously, beautiful song and if you want to put in regular rotation fine by me. The Delteens song, "Listen to the Rain" is also cool. Do you have the Jive 5 's "My True Story"? Another magical song. Nice work man.

Jim Curran - Great songs today!
Mon, 10 Feb 2003 7:45:21 PM EST

It's all been great, but dude, where did you find that killer song from Susie and the 4 Trumpets "Starry Eyes"! What a piece of art that is. That song is what the oldies is all about my man. Short, passionate, a beautiful haunting melody/hook from that brother singing it throughout. God bless 'em all wherever they are. Is it anywhere at all ? Check it out. You're the best. Pece.

In your playlist window you show "Harmony of Love" by the Five Dollars on the Fortune label. I purchased this and it was not the song playing on your list--I did manage to make out the phrase "Lonliness of Night" over and over in the song; would really like to add this song to my collection--Thanks

Hi Steve, I'm sorry if my playlist had the wrong information on the song played. I have checked and the song indeed isn't "Harmony of Love" by the Five Dollars. I'm checking with my friends at the DooWop corner. As soon as I know more I'll let you know.
GM
If anyone can help us out.... Here's a sample of the song: Lonliness of Night??

You are in fact the man Papaoomowmow! Thanks for hunting it down. Ain't R&B, soul, doo-wop and 50's street corner music from the Italians and brothers the coolest sounds emanating from planet earth? I've been busy all day, but your station is on as of now. Thanks again. Peace. Thank You, Jim "Wel.Com to the Future"

Carl Glasow - This Station Plays Tracks Like
Feb 2003

Hi, You've probably noticed that your live 365 station page has an abbreviated list of "This Station Plays Tracks Like" the past month. I'm having the same problem. I've been bugging live365 about it. I just sent them another email noting that both your station and my were broadcasting 56K mono which might be related to the problem. You may want to bug them, you probably have a little more clout than me. You have a great station. Obviously you've been an inspiration for my station. I've had you on my broadcaster favorite station list since day 1, although I must admit that like most broadcasters I mostly listen to my own station. Anyway, good luck. Carl Glasow Oldies and Blues Thanks

Hi Carl, There's a problem with that script I agree. I don't know if it has anything to do with exeeding the limited amount of space in the "my station" tab of the broadcaster profile, because thats the page that is embedded in your "Stations page". You could easily check that by clearing your "my station" info at your profile (first copy everything so you can redo) and then preview it. I cannot guarantee that you'll be able to redo and save it afterward because perhaps the rules have changed, so beware! Perhaps you could add a "this is what's playing right now" script like other broadcasters have done. Just add the playlist code that you can find here to your "my station" section: For me however - I do not want this to pop up in my player window when listeners view my profile.
Thanks for your kind words. I myself must admit that I'm mostly "monitoring" my own stations too. That's allright but regularly you'll
need to check other stations in order to stay up to date. Have fun

Jim Curran - A song you played
Feb 2003

I love your station! This is my stuff! You just played The Sultans "It'll be easy". Knocked me out daddy-o. Please tell me how to get it, and when you can play it again. I missed the opportunity to click "buy" to link to Amazon.com. Please let me know. What a beautiful song. Only caught the last 1 minute or so. Thank you. Peace.
Jim Curran

Hi Jim, Thank you for listening to Doo-Wop Jukebox Gold!
You can click "buy" at any given time and search for the songs you want at Amazon.com. It's not there, I've checked. The song you refer to is rare. It's on the album "Pittsburgh's Favorite Oldies: At the Hop".
As far as I'm aware (in contrast to what the title suggests) it'll be not easy to get. However, the internet offers a tremendous amount of info if you're willing to search for it.
Try www.allmusic.com, it's the best reference I've found. If you go there just hit the buy button that's placed next to the albumtitles.
Whenever you want an original copy try searching at cdbbq.
And, although I'm not in favor of this because I would like the artists to get their fair share, you could try to find it at one of the peer to peer filesharing programs.
Unfortunately I cannot share my playlist in advance because of the rules at Live365. The Song is in my playlist and will play many more times. It's impossible to say when since it runs randomized. Bye.

David N. Evans - song versions
Jan 2003

Enjoy your station very much. Please regard this as constructive criticism. The versions of "Mr. Bass Man' & "Step By Step" are not the original hits. Not sure if they are re-recordings or alternate takes. Hope you can locate the original versions. I could possible send you mp3 files, if that will help. Thanks for the daily sounds. It makes the work day more interesting and bearable.
Neil.

Hello Neil, I appreciate your comment. It was never the intend to play only original recordings but I agree with you, when playing a song performed by the original artists it's best to play the original version. (Agh..I wished they would never retake their songs).
Your remark led me to browse my playlist and I found that apart from some songs that are listed twice, there are lots of versions of songs by different artists: The Vow, The Time, Moonlight, Please don't go, This is my story and so on.
I play 3 versions of "Gloria": by the Intruders, The Cadillacs and the Cleftones - and there is "So fine" by the Aquatones, the Sheiks and the Fiestas. Not all the same songs but of "Angel of love" there are 4! versions playing, bet you didn't know that. Obviously for many folks only one of them is "The Original". For instance, many more people remember "Hearts of Stone" by the Fontaine Sisters (not played at DWJBG) who by far outsold the Charms with the original. It's also a matter of time: a song by the Orioles performed 10 years later by the Harptones might not only be best remembered but also be better performed because of a more uptempo beat. Whenever I find another version of a song that's much better then the original, or had a higher score, I may choose for that one or simply play both.
I'm curious though. the song "Mr. Bass man" was originally done by Johnny Cymbal wasn't it? (He wrote it - except for the version of "Mr. Bass man" by Little Anthony and the Sophomores that seems to be written (or adapted) by Finiz/Pirollo). "Step by Step" was originally done by the Crests. I play them both and was aware of "Mr Bass Man's" differences but there have been so many (weak) versions that I do not actually recall the true original songs. So.. as you offered, please let's hear your versions. Thanks,
GM

I have logged on a couple of times and noticed the playlist is unavailable--is there a problem with it ? I assumed you were in the process of working on it. Thanks
Steve Camarata

Hi Steve, Thank you for informing me. I had noticed this problem and it seems to have affected allot but not all broadcasters. Saturdaynight or early sunday morning Live365 has rebooted our nanocastserver (SF) due to an upgrade of nanocast. Obviously not all went well. As you are a regular listener you will have noticed that they finally got the scripting going again. I was'nt too concerned that they wouldn't since the buy button on it means income.
